When I was a kid, my buddy Ben
Promised he'd never tell on a friend
But when I cheated on that test in Language Arts
He sang to the teacher like a lark
I promised I'd never forgive him
For committing such a grievous sin
Against his pal and his best friend
And that our friendship was at an end
But now I see
What he did for me
Showed me what a proper boy should be
Taught me honesty and integrity
And although I failed that silly test
I worked hard on all the rest
So I thank God for broken promises
A few years later on down the road
Some rules were broken, some seeds were sowed
I paid the piper like a man
When I took Steff by the hand
And she promised me that she'd be mine
And love me 'til the end of time
But after four unhappy years
Our marriage ended with angry tears
But now I see
What she did for me
Showed me what a proper man should be
Taught me how to cry myself to sleep
And how to love and how to not
And love is all we've really got
So I thank God for broken promises
But with the bad comes good as well
You can't see Heaven without going through Hell
She gave to me my baby girls
Two blue-eyed blonds with dimples and curls
So I live my life with no regrets
But the one thing I cannot forget
Is that I have broken promises too
'Cause Ben's my friend and I hurt Steff too
And I hope they see
What they can be
See what this wayward man can teach
Even though he's just a boy beneath
Although we all might fail a bit
This will not be the end of it
And they'll thank God for broken promises
Yes, I thank God for broken promises
